Meet our Editors

Dr Omar Esau is a veteran sports journalist with over 30 years in the game. From rugby and cricket to soccer and chess, he’s reported on everything from World Cups to school tournaments with dynamic storytelling that puts fans at the heart of the action.

As founder of the Sports Desk on Radio 786, Omar built a reputation for bold reporting that earned him multiple honours, including Western Cape Sports Journalist of the Year (2000, 2005, 2018) and City of Cape Town Sports Journalist of the Year (2013). Beyond journalism, he has shaped sport as President of Chess South Africa, a member of the SA Rugby Legends Association, and recipient of the Cricket Development Award by Dr Ali Bacher (1994).

Omar is also the author of three acclaimed books: Checkmating HIV/AIDS as a Teacher Researcher (2012), Let’s Play Chess (2022), and Scrumming Against All Odds: Voices of SARU Rugby Legends (2025). An NRF-rated researcher, he sharpened his craft with a Sports Journalism course at RNTC in the Netherlands (2009), blending global expertise with local passion. Today, as Editor and owner of SportsDean, Dr Omar Esau drives the mission to celebrate excellence, spotlight untold stories, and inspire the next generation of athletes and fans.

Mubeen Mohamed is a well-known and popular sports journalist based in Cape Town, South Africa. He has been in the sports media industry for eight years. Mubeen has worked in radio, TV, print, and commentary, and is a full-time multimedia journalist.

He has worked for Radio 786, Bush Radio, Radio KC, The South African, Moerat Media, SuperSport Schools application ,
Global Sports Network, Rugby Tens, Varsity Cup, and Pitch Vision. He has also featured on Expresso and Newsroom Afrika. Rugby and cricket are his two main beats, and he has covered both the Springboks’ 2019 and 2023 World Cup campaigns, the Stormers’ URC campaigns from 2021 to present, the Varsity Cup, the Currie Cup, and the British & Irish Lions tour of 2021, to name a few.

In cricket, he has covered the SA20 from season one to present, the ICC World Cups in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2026, and the Women’s World Cup in 2023 in South Africa. Mubeen Mohamed is a valuable and strong addition to the SportsDean team and will cover rugby, cricket, and women’s sport on a regular basis.
